What I loved about the Ergo Baby Carrier was that it was everything my other carriers weren't. The design was so comfortable, with the padded straps and waistband that allowed the weight to be carried not just on my shoulders but also on my hips. So, unlike the Bjorn or the sling, I could wear it for hours without any pain in my shoulders or back.
And, unlike the big bulky framed backpack carrier, it was so light weight that it was easy to put my daughter in and out of the Ergo Baby Carrier as we explored the zoo or went hiking around on a nearby trail.
Finally, as I was to learn with my second child, since the Ergo works as both a front and back carrier, I would be able to use the Ergo as her only carrier from birth (with the infant insert accessory) all the way through her toddler years. Even at 4 years old, she still would often ride in the Ergo at times when we hiked on trails or did other big adventures.
So while the Ergo did seem initially more pricey than a simple sling or some models of the Bjorn, it ended up being really a deal since it replaced all these different carriers with just one I could use through all my daughter's carrier years.
I ended up selling my big, framed backpack carrier -- I just never needed to use it once I had my Ergo. I found the Ergo actually more comfortable than the framed backpack carrier because the baby's weight was right on my back like a piggy back ride, instead of being a bit up and behind me as was the case in the framed backpack. And I could pack the Ergo and take it anywhere, a great change from hauling around the framed backpack carrier.
